DREW

I slept like a baby last night, and not just because Alice wore me out in my surgery. It’s because I’m completely at ease now with my decision to take the risk of moving to this village, as it’s paid off spectacularly. I’m reunited with Alice, and life is worth living again. There might still be obstacles ahead, namely our respective partners finding out, but this isn’t the time for worrying about things going wrong. This is the time for basking in the warm glow that comes from knowing my scheme to get Alice back has worked.

I’m in such a good mood that I decide to leave my car at home and walk to work this morning. It helps that the sun is shining again, though I doubt even a few raindrops would have dampened my mood as I left the house and strolled along the seafront.

Thoughts of Alice are the only thing filling my mind, and all I want to know is when will I see her again? I ask her that exact question via text as I make my commute. I know I’ll have to wait a little while to get a response, because Alice always sleeps in late, but I can’t imagine it will be a disappointing answer. She had as much fun as I did yesterday, so I’m sure she’ll be eager to do it again as soon as possible.

But, rather annoyingly, I end up seeing Alice’s husband before I see her, because Rory is on the high street as I walk along it. When he sees me, he makes a point of coming over to say hello.

‘Hi, mate. How’s things?’

‘Yeah, good thanks. You?’

‘Not bad. Still not feeling one hundred per cent but got to get on with things, right?’

‘I guess.’

‘Any idea when I might hear about my referral?’

Damn it. I still haven’t sent that letter yet.

‘Oh, it should be anytime now. I’ll chase it up today.’

‘No worries, mate. What about the blood test?’

‘Oh, I’m sorry. There was a mix-up there. Some delays. Everything’s slower since the pandemic, I’m afraid. I’ll check for an update when I get to work.’

‘Don’t worry. I’m sure you’ve done everything you can. Well, I better get to work myself. I just popped out for some milk. Have a good one!’

Rory gives me a slap on the back before heading on his way, and I watch him go, unsure what I feel most guilty about. Playing games with his health or playing games with his wife. Probably best not to dwell on either too much though.

The rest of my walk to work is uninterrupted, and after saying good morning to Julie, I sink into my desk chair and prepare for another day of deciphering the hypochondriacs from the genuinely ill. Before I give the green light for the first patient to come through my door, I consult with the calendar on my desk and try to figure out if there might be a date coming up when I could whisk Alice away for a romantic night in a hotel somewhere.
